Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands Open For the Season

Monday, December 16th, 2013

As of last Saturday, Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands are open for the season. Aspen Highlands opened with a bang, offering plenty of powder to those who showed up. The groomed runs were sweet at Buttermilk with some fun features in the terrain park open as well. The 2013-2014 ski season is shaping up to be pretty awesome!

At the shop here we’ve been testing out the new ski and snowboard equipment we have for hire. We’ve been really impressed with what companies like Volkl, K2, Rossignol, and Salomon have been doing with their skis. Johnny was out on the new Rome Reverb Rocker the other day and came back grinning from ear to ear. We’re stoked to have Rome Snowboards as part of our rentals this year.

Stop by our shop and say hi when you’re in town for the Holidays. Don’t forget to book your rentals in advance right here on our website to receive a great discount. Hope to see you soon!

Spring Break!!!

Friday, March 8th, 2013

The snow keeps on coming and the action is heating up with spring break just around the corner! There are tons of fun events coming up this month in Aspen Snowmass. Bud Light Big Air Fridays will continue every week through the end of the month. A couple other competitions coming up soon are the KickAspen Big Air on the 23rd and the Buttermilk Snowboard Rail Jam on the 31st. There are some awesome ski races coming up as well, such as the NASTAR National Championships on the 20th, the Elk Mountains Grand Traverse on the 29th, and the Battle in the Bowls at Aspen Highlands on the 30th.

This is one of the best times of year to take a ski vacation (and work on your goggle tan). The snow coverage is great, and the weather is even better! Get your friends together and start planning now, and don’t forget to reserve your ski rentals early.

p.s. More snow is on the way. 4-7” tonight and another 4-7” through Saturday! (Read as: POWDER DAY!) Check out our Facebook page for more frequent updates as we’ll be posting some pictures over the next couple of days. Click below to drop in.

SIA and Snow!!

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Guess what? We’ve got snow! The last winter storm that rolled through this area at the beginning of last week left Snowmass with about 14 inches of new snow for the storm total, Aspen Mountain reported 19 inches of powder, while Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands got 17 and 15 inches respectively. And that’s not all, because another snow storm is in the weather forecast to hit us this coming weekend! Ullr is finally giving us the weather we’ve been waiting for!

Some of our crew was lucky enough to spend last weekend over in Denver at the SIA Snow Show. They were there checking out all of the new ski and snowboard gear for the 2013-2014 season. Then on Monday and Tuesday they were burdened with the task of taking the skis and snowboards to the snow and testing them out. Our rental skis and snowboards for next year are looking pretty sweet!

X-games

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

The 2013 ESPN Winter X Games 17 is in full swing here in Aspen, Colorado! It kicked off today with some practice and elimination rounds in Ski and Snowboard Slopestyle and Superpipe, and wraps up the night with Snowmobile Freestyle Finals. It continues with non-stop action all throughout the weekend. One event that is going to be particularly exciting is the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle Final where Shaun White will try to upset reigning Mark McMorris who won double gold last year in this event and the Snowboard Big Air at Buttermilk. Later in 2012 at X Games Tignes, White went on to win double gold in Slopestyle and Superpipe for his first appearance there. So there is definitely going to be some fierce competition out there as these two battle it out! If we’re lucky, this may be the year we see the first ever triple cork in a slopestyle contest.

Here are some other athletes to watch for:
Kelly Clark & Gretchen Bleiler– Women’s Snowboard Superpipe
Bobby Brown – Men’s Ski Big Air and Slopestyle
Torin Yater-Wallace – Men’s Ski Superpipe

Keep in mind, as the crowds flock over to Buttermilk to get in on the action, the mountains clear out for some great skiing. Expect to see a few inches of fresh snow throughout the weekend as well! If you venture over to Snowmass you might catch a glimpse of a green and black blur as I rip down Big Burn on a set of Salomon Enduros.

K2 Splitboard

Friday, December 28th, 2012

Have any of you shredders out there been dreaming of some backcountry skinning trips? K2 snowboarding just released some news on their new splitboard setup.

Remember the old K2 step-in snowboard bindings? Well, K2’s new Kwicker touring setup is a spin off that old system, mated with the Voile puck and plate system, and a snowboard boot with more internal support to make up for the lack of highbacks. What’s the point, you might be asking? Well it weights same as your normal board, (four pounds lighter than most other splitboard setups) and the transition time between touring and shredding is cut in half. So it’s way lighter, faster for transitions, and pretty painless to use!

We’re thinking Buttermilk full moon skin and 10th Mountain Division Hut trip to Margy’s or McNamara Huts up out of Aspen! The snow conditions getting better by the day!

Transworld Snowboarding sat down with K2’s Global Marketing Manager Hunter Waldron to get the skinny after they caught wind of it on his Instagram feed. Here’s a link to the full Q&A article:
